Minor Issue for Databases Resolved

[3/22 @ 1:00 pm - Matthew]

The Database A-Z list is experiencing some issues right now. The page should be showing all 291 of our resources, and while it does show that we have that many in the system, it is only displaying 100 (reflected in the heading at the top of the list). What's more, the databases are alphabetized only by the first letter of the name, and after that, they seem to be randomly arranged.

I have a ticket in to Springshare about this, and hope to have it resolved quickly.

We're being assured that they are looking through all of the desk drawers and cabinets in their offices, as well as the code, to find the missing permalinks. They will update us once they have a solution in place.

The patch to fix Summon permalinks was pushed live last night, and permalinks have returned to search results:

Minor Issue for Databases Resolved

[1/12 @ 11:08 am - Matthew]

Faculty and Staff with Windows 8 machines cannot view the Database A-Z page from off-campus. Something on LibGuides seems to be conflicting with IT's auto-VPN setup called "GVSU-DIrectAccess."

We have contacted Springshare to see what might be happening on their end, and will continue to try to get IT to take a look at the issue.

We also encourage you to ask the faculty and staff members to submit a ticket with the help desk. Hopefully force of numbers will help us diagnose the issue.

[3:04 pm - Matthew]

We've identified the problem with Windows 8 machines not accessing library sites or resources from off-campus: IT's DirectAccess configuration seems to ignore the ANAMEs we've added to the server to give our vendor-hosted systems a gvsu.edu domain name. So, visiting libguides.gvsu.edu tells a server somewhere that this URL should direct folks to another server, one hosted at libguides.com. This is incredibly common behavior on the web, but the configuration of IT's DirectConnect seems to break these ANAME forwarding patterns.

The trouble is, IT manages both the ANAMEs and the DirectConnect. We've contacted them with this information and are waiting for follow-up.

[1/22 @ 9:15 am - Matthew]

IT has finally gotten back with us about this, and it seems like it was a pretty quick fix for them. They've added all of our ANAME sites to the Direct Access exception list, and this problem should be resolved. Mary will try to test it off-campus later today.

We're still working to clarify whether faculty or staff will have to do something to their machines to load the new settings, or whether it will be seamless for them. I'll updated once we know the issues has been addressed.

[1/25 @ 2:59 pm - Matthew]

IT has made the necessary changes to allow Windows 8 laptops with DirectAccess to use library resources, including the database A-Z list, LibGuides, the Knowledge Base, the catalog, ScholarWorks, the Library Labs site, and all EZProxied links.

This Minor Issue was reported on 1/12/16 and resolved on 1/25/16.

Our proxy software (allows access to online resources from off campus) will be migrating to a new server this Saturday, September 26 at 9:30 pm. We tried to get this done before the semester started but the vendor couldnt accommodate, Saturday evening should minimize the impact.

Minor Issue for Homepage Resolved

[9/13 @ 1:46 pm - Matthew]

The hours page is wrong again, this time saying that we're closed early in the day even when we're open. I've removed the hours module from the home page and will deal with it tomorrow. I have reported the problem to Institutional Marketing.

[9/14 @ 3:04 pm - Matthew]

Institutional Marketing has removed the "current" status text from the hours module in favor of just showing the opening and closing hours. As I have time over the next few weeks, I'll add a script that will convert these to the familiar text our users have preferred.

This Minor Issue was reported on 9/13/15 and resolved on 9/14/15.

Minor Issue for Subject & Course Guides Resolved

[9/11 @ 10:08 am - Matthew]

The drop-down subject picker is not working on any guide in the edit mode, so you cannot assign subjects to guides. Assigning subjects to databases seems to be working fine. I've reported the issue to Springshare.

[11:42 am - Matthew]

Some of the custom styles I was using to make the database A-Z page look good were actually conflicting with the subject drop-down on the edit screen, so I've added styles to override the conflict. You may need to refresh your browser's cache to see the changes.

This Minor Issue was reported on 9/11/15 and resolved on 9/11/15.

[9/10 @ 8:38 am - Matthew]

The hours module on the homepage is still not working correctly. It continues to say that the Mary Idema Pew Library is closed from midnight until 2am, even though we are open. I have reopened the issue with Institutional Marketing.

[9/11 @ 8:14 am - Matthew]

This is still not fixed.

[11:43 am - Matthew]

The web team has run more tests and thinks the hours module should be working correctly. Just in case, I've added a JavaScript patch that will check to make sure the hours module is working correctly after midnight and will rewrite the hours in the browser if it is saying we are closed when we should be open.

Feature Request for Subject & Course Guides Resolved

[8/11 @ 3:30 pm - Matthew]

I've asked Springshare to give us the ability to set "pretty" URLs for things like the database Types or database Subjects. Currently they are quite ugly, and I have to build a URL for them outside the system. This work-around is fine, except for there is no way for me to share the "pretty" URL with anyone oyher than the folks who asked for it.

For instance, Lindy asked for a pretty URL for the Streaming Videos database landing page, so I made her http://gvsu.edu/library/videodb (/video was already in use).

[3/2 @ 1:29 pm - Matthew]

Apparently, there is already a way to do this by using the "Tagging Subjects, & URLs" feature, although not even the folks at Springshare realized it at the time. I'll work on creating useful URLs for the subjects and formats, although I'm still stumped on how best to share them.

This Feature Request was reported on 8/11/15 and resolved on 3/2/16.

Minor Issue for Summon Resolved

[7/24 @ 8:10 pm - Matthew]

The RSS feeds that Summon just launched appear to only work with browser-based RSS readers. This means that you can't use them in LibGuides or any non-browser based RSS reader. Apparently no one at ProQuest thought to test that. Bob brought the problem to my attention, and I was able to diagnose the issue, and ProQuest confirmed my suspicions. They've promised to get a fix out ASAP. I'll update when I know more.

[1/20 @ 11:27 am - Matthew]

As of today, this is still an open issue. RSS feeds generated by Summon are including HTML tags to format the document, rather than XML tags. (You can see a validation sample of an RSS feed here.)

I've gone back through the list archives, and the last update was from the Summon project manager on September 15th, telling me he'd look into it. I sent a message to the Summon list again today asking for an update.

[1/21 @ 12:57 pm - Matthew]

From the project manager today:

"I do not have the RSS issue with external readers resolved yet. It is in the queue to be addressed as soon as possible."

[10/5 @ 10:40 am - Matthew]

RSS Feeds now work in LibGuides and other places! It quietly launched with the new interface at the end of August, and I just noticed it as I tested, because they didn't include it in the release notes.

This Minor Issue was reported on 7/24/15 and resolved on 10/5/16.

Minor Issue for Summon Resolved

[7/7 @ 1:39 pm - Matthew]

Summon searches coming from the library homepage that contain an apostrophe will cause the search to fail, and the Summon search homepage will be displayed instead. ProQuest is aware of the issue, although they haven't mentioned when they plan on fixing it.

[9:46 pm - Matthew]

From the Summon Project Manager via the listserv, ProQuest will be pushing out an update "the week of July 20th" that will address:

  • Resolving authentication issues with RSS feeds
  • Addressing apostrophes breaking search widgets
  • Resolving the Application Error: Unexpected search failure related to publication date and content type limiters = newspaper

I'll update once the fixes are in place.

[7/20 @ 2:05 pm - Matthew]

A fix for this is scheduled for Wednesday, July 22nd.

[1/20 @ 10:48 am - Matthew]

This was fixed in the July updated. Confirmed January 2016.

Update for Databases Resolved

[6/17 @ 10:59 am - Jeff]

Good morning everyone,

We have set up a new resource this morning. Docuseek2 provides access to academic streaming videos, with over 600 titles in all major disciplines.

We will be loading marc records in the new week or so.

Each video has a Link to/Embed button that will provide a link that can be used to add these videos to blackboard. We have unlimited users on this resource.

I have added this to the database table. Liaisons, now that this is set up as a database asset, please let me know if you would like to associate it with any specific subject, if so, let me know if it should be a best bet.

This Update happened on 6/17/15.

Update for Catalog Resolved

Minor Issue for Summon Resolved

[6/12 @ 12:11 pm - Matthew]

Summon has started adding 2 request buttons on the book detail page. I wrote a short script that fixes the issue, but it turns out that it doesn't work the first time the page loads because of the way Summon's underlying Angular.js works.

![Bad request buttons](Dumb design

I don't have time to refactor our summon scripts to watch for Angular page changes today, but I'll try to dive in on Monday and get this sorted. (Unless of course ProQuest realizes that two identical request buttons that do different things is bad design? Don't hold your breath - they've had 2 identical log in links in the header for a year.)

[11:47 pm - Matthew]

I went ahead and just added a style that hides the second request button. A better fix will be coming soon, but this buys us some time.

[1/20 @ 10:47 am - Matthew]

A few months back I added a better fix that correctly styles the two buttons by using CSS rules that look at the URL of the button to make sure that it is looking at the catalog or Illiad buttons.

This Minor Issue was reported on 6/12/15 and resolved on 1/20/16.

Minor Issue for Subject & Course Guides Resolved

[6/11 @ 9:07 am - Matthew]

We asked Springshare to make the close button be the only way that you can close the input modal window in LibAnalytics, per this suggestion by Ashley:

When entering stats like reference consultations and questions [in LibAnalytics], I somewhat frequently accidentally click outside the box while entering the stats and have to re-enter all of my data. It just crossed my mind that you might be able to change it so that clicking the X in the corner would be the only way to close the box. Just a thought in case it is a possibility and you think it might be a well-received change.

[6/12 @ 12:14 pm - Matthew]

Springshare and I were unable to replicate this particular error, so we'll do some more looking and reopen the issue if it recurs.

[6/24 @ 12:21 pm - Matthew]

Springshare has been able to replicate the problem, now that I realized the problem was with embedded links for libanalytics forms. The code is pretty old, so they will have to do some troubleshooting, but we should have a resolution to this soon.

Changing the request type to a minor issue, since Springshare is calling this a bug.

[1/22 @ 9:26 am - Matthew]

This problem was resolved back in June, but neither Springshare nor I realized it. :) LibAnalytics embed links now open in a new window, rather than in a modal window over the existing window.

This Minor Issue was reported on 6/11/15 and resolved on 1/22/16.

Maintenance for Databases Maintenance

[7/1 @ 12:00 am - Sara]

This Maintenance is scheduled from 12:00am 7/1/15 until 12:00am 7/2/15.

Minor Issue for Summon Resolved

[6/9 @ 3:41 pm - Jeff]

Summon isn't behaving. That's the best I have right now. We are aware that links to books aren't working and apparently Summon is returning results as "books" on a number of items that are actually articles. ProQuest is aware of these major glitches and is working to restore proper functionality.

[6/12 @ 12:13 pm - Matthew]

According to ProQuest, this issue has been resolved.

We have validated that the metadata issue involving records erroneously mapped as a "Book" has been resolved. We have also initiated our second index update of the week, which should go live this Sunday.

In case it happens again, Dave Pattern from the University of Huddersfield has written a JavaScript patch to fix the issue on the client side. Let's hope it doesn't happen again.

This Minor Issue was reported on 6/9/15 and resolved on 6/12/15.

Minor Issue for Subject & Course Guides Resolved

[5/29 @ 10:47 am - Matthew]

It seems that you cannot remove all of the subject associations from a database record. We've reported this to Springshare.

[11:09 am - Matthew]

Springshare was already aware of this bug, and there is a path that will be pushed live sometime in June. I'll update once the problem has been fixed.

[1/20 @ 11:41 am - Matthew]

You can now remove all subject associations from a database record.

This Minor Issue was reported on 5/29/15 and resolved on 1/20/16.

This Outage was reported on 4/27/15 and resolved on 5/6/15.

Update for Databases Resolved

[4/24 @ 2:32 pm - Jeff]

We have switched vendors for the resource Index Islamicus. We have moved from EBSCO to ProQuest. The reason is that for over a year we have been reporting to EBSCO that by using roman numerals for issues numbers, they are causing our link resolver to fail even when we have full text. ProQuest is using the proper OpenURL standard of Arabic Numerals and therefor the link resolver works properly. (it was also cheaper!)

This Update happened on 4/24/15.

Minor Issue for Subject & Course Guides Resolved

[4/23 @ 9:37 pm - Matthew]

Elizabeth pointed out that the Subject and Type filters work together in the new A-Z list, although it is hard to tell that you've already selected something if you move on to the next filter. I'm looking to make some changes to improve usability of those drop-downs.

[9:38 pm - Matthew]

Based on some quick and dirty testing, inverting the colors of the selected items made it very clear to folks that there was something selected. I've pushed this change live, and for those who are curious about the fix, written a bit more about it with code on Github.

This Minor Issue was reported on 4/23/15 and resolved on 4/23/15.

Maintenance for Databases Maintenance

[4/22 @ 9:36 am - Sara]

On Friday May 1 EBSCO will be doing maintenance that will result in several services not being available: EBSCO A-to-Z and LinkSource,EBSCO A-to-Z Administration Site, and EBSCONET. This Maintenance is scheduled from 09:36am 4/22/15 until 12:00am 5/2/15.

Outage for Databases Resolved

We have an email into the vendor, but I think I've found a link that will work for now.

[9:57 am - Jeff]

We're back live

This Outage was reported on 4/22/15 and resolved on 4/22/15.

Update for Databases Resolved

[4/21 @ 2:52 pm - Jeff]

Credo Reference is making some slight changes to their interface. Ben and Jeff have looked at the screen shots and they are minor, but should increase usability. Credo wants to roll some libraries over to the new interface in May and test how patrons use the new interface. We don't need to do anything, our links will stay the same. We'v told them to go ahead and included GVSU in their testing.

This Update happened on 4/21/15.

Minor Issue for Link Resolver Resolved

[4/21 @ 11:18 am - Matthew]

360Link 2.0 includes a "Custom Javascript" function, but it doesn't seem to work. The script is never loaded. Consequently, I've had to load my scripts before the ProQuest libraries, and use timeouts to keep them from executing until all the ProQuest scripts are in place. I've reported this as a bug.

[9/14 @ 3:10 pm - Matthew]

Since we are not migrating to 360Link 2.0 until they force us to, I'm closing this issue.

This Minor Issue was reported on 4/21/15 and resolved on 9/14/15.

Feature Request for Chat & Knowledgebase Resolved

[4/17 @ 1:29 pm - Matthew]

The LibChat widget currently doesn't check to see if jQuery is already loaded on a page before loading it, causing the script to be loaded twice in several of our systems (including Summon, 360Link2.0, Ares, Illiad, etc.)

I've asked Springshare to check for jQuery support before loading the script with their widget.

[4/20 @ 10:02 am - Matthew]

Springshare added this to the feature request list, and asked me if I had other reasons to implement it. So I sent along this list along with a suggestion:

  1. Performance - loading jQuery twice adds an extra 35kb plus a sever request to the user's browser. This affects not only speed but also data plans.
  2. jQuery conflicts. If someone is running jQuery 2.x, when you load your jQuery 1.11.x there are a few functions that cause conflicts.
  3. No conflict mode. If you're not running jQuery in no-conflict mode, then you could cause issues with sites that are already running Prototype, or other libraries that have mapped the $ prefix. (Like 360Link from ProQuest). Likewise, if you run it in no conflict mode, you could cause conflicts in versions between my jQuery that I'm loading in 360Link in no conflict mode, if I were running a different version that you! :)

It should be as easy as adding something like this function, adapted from Karl Swedberg's jQueryify bookmarklet:

if(typeof jQuery!='undefined') {
    console.log('This page already using jQuery v'+jQuery.fn.jquery);
} else if (typeof $=='function') {
    otherlib=true;
    $jq=jQuery.noConflict(); // Use $jq in script instead of $
}

I will update on that status of this once I hear back from Springshare.

[1:41 pm - Matthew]

I took a closer look at Springshare's code, and they are testing for jQuery before they load it with window.jQuery (lines cf. 28). I suspect the issue is that because ProQuest is loading both Prototype (why?!?) and jQuery on 360Link, and running jQuery in no conflict mode, the global jQuery & $ variables are somehow registering as undefined when Springshare's widget queries them. (This article might give some insight.)

Not sure if this can be addressed, since it's a specific case to how two versions of jQuery get loaded when one product is used on another product page, but I'll keep tinkering with it.

[4/21 @ 11:17 am - Matthew]

Since there is no way for me to load the relevant LibChat script after ProQuest loads jQuery until ProQuest fixes their 360Link 2.0 "Custom JavaScript" function, LibChat is checking for jQuery before the other version loads. I'm closing this out as a Springshrare issue, and moving it to the Link Resolver.

This Feature Request was reported on 4/17/15 and resolved on 4/21/15.

Minor Issue for Summon Resolved

[4/17 @ 11:34 am - Matthew]

The script I wrote to add in our chat button in Summon is making it very hard to click on the "Saved Items" icon in Summon, since the actual icon is not part of the markup for the link. My chat button is pushing the link markup further down the page. I'm working on a fix.

[12:31 pm - Matthew]

I've fixed this issue, and also made the chat button display whether chat services are available or not (and improved chat positioning on smaller screens.)

This Minor Issue was reported on 4/17/15 and resolved on 4/17/15.

Update for Databases Resolved

[4/15 @ 1:46 pm - Matthew]

All database have now been mapped to subjects in the new LibGuides Database A-Z List. If you are a liaison, please take a moment to make sure your subject databases are correct, and thank Amy from KARMS for all the hard work mapping well over half of these databases!

This Update happened on 4/15/15.

Maintenance for Databases Maintenance

[4/15 @ 11:24 am - Sara]

ProQuest Databases will see maintenance on Sat April 19th starting 3pm lasting up to 5 hours.

This Maintenance is scheduled from 11:24am 4/15/15 until 12:00am 4/20/15.

Minor Issue for Link Resolver Resolved

[4/14 @ 3:20 pm - Matthew]

Serials Solutions changed the underlying HTML structure of the default citation fields in 360Link, which means our script is turning up empty fields for all parts of the citation except for the author. I'm looking into it.

[3:41 pm - Matthew]

This happened when we turned on the test functionality for 360Link 2.0. I've turned off those testing features, so the problem has been fixed.

This Minor Issue was reported on 4/14/15 and resolved on 4/14/15.

Minor Issue for Ensemble Video Resolved

[4/13 @ 4:05 pm - Mary]

Links in catalog are going to the full list of videos and not directly to the video. I am working with Ensemble Video to get this fixed.

[7/2 @ 9:27 am - Mary]

This was resolved a long time ago. Sorry I forgot to update this status.

This Minor Issue was reported on 4/13/15 and resolved on 7/2/15.

Update for Databases Resolved

[4/13 @ 3:46 pm - Matthew]

Today we mapped databases into subjects beginning with the letters E-G & N-Z. Thanks to Amy from KARMS for helping!

Tomorrow I hope to finish the last few subjects (H-M).

This Update happened on 4/13/15.

Minor Issue for Summon Resolved

[4/13 @ 8:59 am - Sara]

When searching for Streaming Videos, results that are hosted by Film on Demand are currently not linking through Summon. Users are taken to the citation page but not to the video. Videos still work in Films on Demand, they just need to correct the linking in Summon. Other steaming videos appear to work. Please report if you find otherwise. Serials Solutions is aware of this issue and is working on it.

[4/23 @ 12:53 pm - Sara]

SS has updated us that this issue is now resolved. We have confirmed, Films on Demand videos should again be able to be directly access in Summon. Please let us know if you are still seeing problems.

This Minor Issue was reported on 4/13/15 and resolved on 4/23/15.

Update for Databases Resolved

[4/10 @ 3:02 pm - Matthew]

I've mapped all subjects beginning with the letters A-D in the new LibGuides Database A-Z List. It's a slow, manual process, so I'll work on the next batch early next week.

This Update happened on 4/10/15.

Minor Issue for Subject & Course Guides Resolved

[4/10 @ 2:50 pm - Matthew]

The search function in the administrative Database Subject Mappings screen is not working. I've reported the problem to Springshare, but in the meantime, just browse for the appropriate subject.

[4/15 @ 1:47 pm - Matthew]

This only seems to affect Chrome and Firefox browsers on the Mac.

[4/17 @ 10:36 am - Matthew]

New update from Springshare:

The search in the admin side (inside boxes) is really just a filter for the title field. The issue you are reporting in is a known issue, which we are working on fixing, but we don't have an ETA as it's been hard bug to consistently reproduce.

[9/14 @ 3:26 pm - Matthew]

My testing today seems to show that searching in the database subject field is working now, although I didn't see it reported as a fixed bug in any of the recent updates. Closing out this ticket for now.

This Minor Issue was reported on 4/10/15 and resolved on 9/14/15.

Outage for Databases Resolved

[4/9 @ 1:10 pm - Ben]

The ProQuest databases are down presently. They are aware of the problem and are working to it. They say it shouldn't be down for too long. We will update this pst when they are back up and working.

[2:51 pm - Ben]

I have just checked them again and they seem to be back up and working. We will keep an eye on it to see if the access stays stable.

This Outage was reported on 4/9/15 and resolved on 4/9/15.

Update for Catalog Resolved

[4/8 @ 3:26 pm - Sara]

April Serial Solutions MARC Records 04/08/2015: We added 442 new serial solutions journal Marc records today. We now have 66,847 total in our collection.

This Update happened on 4/8/15.

Feature Request for Subject & Course Guides Resolved

[4/8 @ 10:55 am - Matthew]

I asked Springshare whether we could have the Database A-Z search target more than just Database titles. In our usability test on April 2nd, we saw folks start typing keyword searches into the field so quickly that the placeholder text disappeared before they realized that the search only worked on known items (titles).

[3:35 pm - Matthew]

From Springshare:

The search box for databases is currently a filter. It says title search, but it will pick up on descriptions as well. (I've seen this be an issue with the ovid nursing database, for example- it pulls in "provides" in descriptions as well)

This is on our list of things we'd like to fix. We want to adjust the search features so that this is an actual search, rather than a filter.

[3/2 @ 1:30 pm - Matthew]

I asked Springshare about this:

we are currently working on a major update to searching, which would include making the A-Z page searchable. We would like to do this soon, but again, giving you any firm dates is not possible.

[5/9 @ 11:55 am - Matthew]

The most recent update to LibGuides search functionality made the Database search much more effective. Search now checks mapped subjects, full-text of descriptions, and other metadata in the record.

Update for Databases Resolved

[4/6 @ 3:57 pm - Jeff]

At last week's usability testing we noticed a student become confused by us offering two links into Business Source Complete. You can search BSC on the standard EBSCO interface, but you can also search it using their business interface, tweaked specifically for the content in that resource. In the past we had links to both, but Cara and I discussed this and decided to go down to one link into the content (It's the business interface).

Good afternoon, We have just set up this exciting new resource. This is a collection of over 9,000 streaming videos.

I have set this up on the database table, as well as adding it to the LibGuides A-Z database list.

A few things to note. GVSU does have unlimited users to each title in this collection. We also have public performance rights for all of these titles. These can be shown at a GVSU event even if there are members from the public present AS LONG AS we are not charging any admission.

We are doing a combination of DDA (Demand Driven Access) as well as subscription (to one collection), if you would like more details please ask myself or Sarah Beaubien.

There have been a lot of faculty waiting to use this resource, please spread the word. We are working to add these titles to our catalog, but at this time not every title has a marc records, I have already asked when they expect that to be complete. The content is indexed in Summon.

Yes Killing us Softly 4 is a title in this collection.

Thank you,

Jeffrey Daniels

Should be resolved after Saturday when they will be running an update.

Minor Issue for Subject & Course Guides Resolved

[2/18 @ 11:09 am - Matthew]

Some assets appear to not respect the description display settings all the time. Kim reported that some assets in the LGBT guide were supposed to show descriptions below the title (and had been showing that way) all of a sudden became pop-up descriptions. When she clicked "Edit" and saw that the settings already said show below the title, the descriptions went back to behaving normally. A few minutes later when I checked, they had gone back to being pop-ups.

I have reported the issue to Springshare, with a screencast of the issue.

[12:17 pm - Matthew]

Springshare was already aware of this issue, and pushed an update out to fix it last night. By clearing my browser's cache, I was able to fix this issue. If you run into this, please clear your cache and reload the page to see if that addresses the issue.

Feature Request for Subject & Course Guides Resolved

[2/18 @ 10:54 am - Matthew]

Currently it doesn't seem possible to run a usage report for those assets flagged as databases - you can only run a report on individual assets or on all the assets. We have 300 databases, too many for running individual reports, and almost 14,000 assets, too many to sift through to find the databases. I've asked them to give functionality for reports by databases only.

[11:56 am - Matthew]

Turns out if you run the report for all assets, you can then filter to only show databases. This wasn't obvious when I tried myself, but support explained it and this works perfectly. The database report can then be exported as a PDF or a Spreadsheet.

This Feature Request was reported on 2/18/15 and resolved on 2/18/15.

Google Scholar & Get it @ GVSU Article Linker: Google appears to have made changes to their format. Our button for article linking from Google Scholar traditionally was placed directly to the right of the article it was linking. Now you will find this feature at the very bottom of the article details. Where you see "cited by, citation, ect, you will see "More" as an option. Click on this to see our Get it @ GVSU button. This is not ideal but it is not within our control to make changes to this particular feature.

It seems that when the master record for assets are updated, not all of the mapped locations of the asset are showing the changes. We made a slight change to the description of the ’Annee Philologique, but while the change appeared in the Classics guide, it did not appear in the Philosophy guide, despite both guides using the same asset.

I've reported the problem to Springshare.

If you have a value listed for "Custom Description" it will override the default. For some reason, the Philosophy guide had a custom description that was a duplicate of the default description.

In order for links to appear in Google Scholar results, users may need to visit Google Scholars settings/library links section and choose to display links for your institution in order for the links to appear again in the Google results. We apologize for the inconvenience that this may have caused your users."

Minor Issue for Subject & Course Guides Resolved

[11/18 @ 2:51 pm - Matthew]

Sometimes when a guide has been transferred from one person to another, box permissions are not changing and specific boxes or items are not editable by the guide owner. I've reported the problem to Springshare, and in the meantime the solution is to delete the box or item owned by a previous owner and recreate them.

[6:46 pm - Matthew]

Springshare indicates that the mismatch in guide and asset ownership is directly related to assets having owners. Springshare will be removing asset ownership (as I understand it) in the next few weeks, and this problem will go away.

If you need an item edited or deleted in the meantime, let Matt know.

I will update once the changes go live.

[3/17 @ 7:25 am - Matthew]

This was resolved in the LibGuides 2.1 update.

Minor Issue for Subject & Course Guides Resolved

[11/6 @ 3:50 pm - Matthew]

Currently, the page editing toolbar is not appearing on pages when editing them. This means you can't change the publication status of a guide, among other things. You can see the empty space in the upper right of the screenshot below shows where the toolbar should be.

Missing toolbar

Thanks to Elizabeth for pointing this out. I've put in a ticket to Springshare.

[5:00 pm - Matthew]

Springshare decoupled the search box from the Admin bar, and this affected folks with custom templates (like us). We noticed it so quickly that their ingenious fix (below) hadn't yet gone live.

Command bar patch

I've added back the sections of the template that were missing, and the button is back!

There still seems to be issues with patrons requesting items and getting a successful message, but the requests not actually getting put on their accounts. We had a patron report the problem yesterday, after the III fix was applied. The issue will be re-opened with III.

[6/19 @ 11:14 am - Patrick]

We are again getting reports of this issue. III is still unable to track down the problem, but it's happening more often than previously, so hopefully that will help them find the issue.

[6/23 @ 12:27 pm - Patrick]

Minor Issue for Catalog Resolved

[10/2 @ 9:02 am - Patrick]

Patrons are getting messages saying that their requests were successful, when in fact they were not. The items are available and requestable, but Sierra isn't putting the item on hold or printing paging slips. There is no way for the patron to know if the request was actually successfully requested or not. This has been reported to III and they are looking into it.

[10/27 @ 10:18 pm - Patrick]

After working with III, they identified some issues with our automatic request processing. They restarted some processes and we've not seen any issues since the fix. We are still on the look out for any issues, but are hopeful this is completely resolved.

This Maintenance is scheduled from 03:26pm 10/1/14 until 11:09am 1/22/15.

Minor Issue for Summon Resolved

[9/30 @ 9:10 am - Matthew]

When emailing results to yourself, the HTML code from the display page comes through with the email (they didn't set the email MIME type correctly, I suspect.) This has been a known issue for some time, and it is currently on the road map to be fixed by December 2014.

[4/17 @ 12:35 pm - Matthew]

This has been fixed. When sending an email, you have a choice between HTML or Text format. HTML emails appear to be sending with the correct MIME type, and I've tested them in several email clients. Please let me know if you see this issue pop up again!

This Minor Issue was reported on 9/30/14 and resolved on 4/17/15.

Minor Issue for Databases Resolved

[9/18 @ 9:04 am - Sara]

SRDS had a tool Local Market Analysis that it hosts which will not work with any browser outside of IE8 and below. Last year this time (Oct 2013) they gave us the work around of using compatibility mode on IE to get the tool to work. This year they found that we can use Firefox and Google if we download the add ons for IE specifically (IE Tab V2 (Enhanced IE Tab) 5.12.12.1) for Firefox and the "IE Tab" for Google Chrome, found via search in the Google web store. I tried both of these and they provide a compatibility icon in the upper right of the browser, once clicked this will let you access SRDS and use LMA without problem. LMA is the only issue here. This does not affect other SRDS resources.

Minor Issue for Summon Resolved

[9/3 @ 8:54 pm - Matthew]

Summon recently added a "Log in" link to the header that takes folks to ProQuest Flow to allow them to save citations and whatnot. The problem is, if you are off-campus you'll get a banner to "Log in to see more" resources. That's 2 links with the same label, "Log in." The additional problem is that the off-campus proxy log in link doesn't look like a link, since it's not underlined and is the same color as the text around it (thank you, 23 year old web designers!)

Here's a screen shot of what it looks like:

Summon Log in Log in

I'm going to at least make the link in the off-campus banner look like a link, and I've reported the issue to ProQuest. I have not received a response, so I'll try to cook up something else to fix this.

[9/11 @ 4:33 pm - Matthew]

I changed the labeling of the 2 links, and forced the off-campus banner to have an underline so that it looks like a link. The Flow link now says "Log in to ProQuest Flow" with a title attribute that says "Save and organize citations to make reading and writing easier." The title attribute will display as a little pop-up if you hover your pointer over the link for a moment. The off-campus link now says "Log in with your GVSU account" to add some clarity.

You may have to clear your browser's cache to see the changes.

Feature Request for Subject & Course Guides Resolved

[9/2 @ 12:03 pm - Matthew]

I submitted the following issues regarding the link check to Springshare (thanks to Debbie for the detailed feedback!) I hope these will make the link checker more functional.

  1. When I make an edit the list resorts in some fashion I haven't been able to figure out... no idea where items are going, makes it hard to work through a list systematically.
  2. When I go to inspect a link, the ONLY way to guess where it occurs among my guides is to click on the ACTION icon as if to edit. Klutzy.
  3. I'd REALLY like some kind of indicator in the list as to the publication status of the guide a link occurs in: if it's an unpublished guide, I may not really give repairing that link top priority when working through a long list.
  4. Nothing in the display signals when I've made a change -- I found myself looking at the same items as they (randomly?) showed up "next" on the report I was working through. (kind of related to (1) above.)
  5. Really annoying that I will have to wait until next week (after each Saturday, I guess) to see what actually remains on the list as improperly functioning links.
[9/3 @ 8:57 pm - Matthew]

Response from Springshare:

  1. Looks like the default sort is Title Ascending, so if you make an edit to the title, the list will re-sort according to the change you made. I do not believe it sorts any other way, unless of course you change the sort order then happen to edit an asset in the field it's sorting on.
  2. because assets exist independently of a guide (in the Assets repository), linking to the asset edit screen is the most expedient way to get you the list of where the link appears. We could add more filtering options, though--I'm talking to the developer about how to make this work better.
  3. This isn't possible, either, since assets don't live in guides. An asset can be used in many places, and the guides in which it's used could have any of the publication statuses. However, I've passed this on as well.
  4. We've been discussing this--we hope to find a way that you can "dismiss" a link so that you know you've dealt with it in the current report.
  5. The link checker runs on Saturdays because of the drain it poses on server resources. That said, we have moved the process to an entirely new architecture, so once a majority of LibGuides 1 users move to LibGuides 2, we might be able to revisit this. If this is a huge concern for your institution, there are other link-checking options that you could explore, including free browser extensions that do a page at a time. (I'm not sure the extensions would be useful in the grand scheme of things, but it might be helpful to those who'd like to work within the guide framework rather than from the Assets repository point of view.)
[8:59 pm - Matthew]

I'm looking into tying link checking into the workflow I use for the rest of the website, and will update folks on any other news from Springshare on these requests.

[3/2 @ 1:31 pm - Matthew]

Updates from Springshare on the link checker:

  • Link-checker frequency: Sorry, we're not able to run the link checker more often than once a week at this time. That would greatly compromise the speed of LibGuides to your users, as well as increase our probability of getting false positives from servers that end up blocking us because of high level repeated pinging.
  • Dismissing link-checker links: this is on our list of potential link checker improvements, but I can't give you an ETA as to when this might be developed.
[5/9 @ 11:46 am - Matthew]

I'm looking into alternatives for checking links on LibGuides. Since SS can't do anything about these issues, I'm going to close this ticket out for now.

Feature Request for Subject & Course Guides Resolved

[8/26 @ 1:06 pm - Matthew]

We asked Springshare for two more column layout options: 33/66 and 66/33. We'll see what they say!

[6/12 @ 12:18 pm - Matthew]

Springshare has added a new feature to the column layout options: custom widths. You can now set the exact size of the columns (as a percentage) by selecting "Custom Column Widths" from the bottom of the Layout dropdown in your guides.

Custom Width

This solves this particular problem, so I'm closing out the feature request.

[11:18 am - Matthew]

LibGuides 2.0 is now available at libguides.gvsu.edu. If you're not seeing that site right away, try clearing your cache, or try back later since the DNS may not have made it everywhere.

Minor Issue for Subject & Course Guides Resolved

[8/12 @ 9:51 pm - Matthew]

Manual guide backups are not working. Selecting the option displays "Coming Soon!" This has not yet been added to the roadmap from Springshare, so I asked them to give us an estimate of when this will be live on the new site.

[8/13 @ 9:41 am - Matthew]

Springshare has no date as to when this will be live:

I cannot give a firm date as to when guide backups will happen. It is on our developers' to-do list and lots of people are requesting it, so hopefully it will not be much longer.

[12/18 @ 6:13 am - Matthew]

I followed up with them this week for Elizabeth on this, and they still don't have an ETA.

[3/17 @ 7:27 am - Matthew]

Manual guide backups are here! As of the upcoming LibGuides 2.1.5 update (scheduled for Friday afternoon, 3/20) you will be able to back up your guides in HTML format. (XML format was quietly supported with the last update.)

You can read more on Springshare's blog about release 2.1.5.

Please let me know if you have any issues with Guide backups, and please take advantage of this!

Minor Issue for Subject & Course Guides Resolved

[8/12 @ 9:47 pm - Matthew]

Editing the profile box title in the LibApps Dashboard has no effect on the profile box titles in LibGuides. Springshare is aware of the problem, and the work around for now is to edit the titles of the profile boxes individually within your guides.

[9/14 @ 3:23 pm - Matthew]

Edits to your profile title in LibApps now appear in LibGuides profile boxes. You may need to re-add the profile box in LibGuides if you have customized the title, however.

This Outage was reported on 8/8/14 and resolved on 8/8/14.

Minor Issue for Subject & Course Guides Resolved

[8/7 @ 4:04 pm - Matthew]

Clicking on the edit icon in a box in the far right column pops up a menu, but the menu is covered up by the blue background off to the right of the page. This is a style issue that has to do with our Libraries template, not a Springshare issue. I am working on a fix.

[8/13 @ 10:04 am - Matthew]

I updated the template styles to fix this issue. (For those interested, the GVSU template #content wrapper and #page-content wrappers both had a style called "overflow: hidden." This meant that anything that might bleed over the edges of these wrappers would be hidden. The fix was to add a new style to override the default, setting "overflow: visible.")

This Minor Issue was reported on 8/7/14 and resolved on 8/13/14.

Minor Issue for Subject & Course Guides Resolved

[8/7 @ 4:02 pm - Matthew]

It appears that the migration moved over old profile data. Many folks have out of date subjects and contact information. Please double-check your profile data by clicking on the blue box on the left of the Dashboard menu, selecting "LibApps Dashboard," and then clicking the "My Profile."

If you need subjects added or altered, let me know since this is now an administrative feature.

[8/13 @ 6:13 pm - Matthew]

I have updated everyone's expertise areas to match the Librarians by subject/name pages, with a few exceptions. I'm not clear on who the expert(s) should be for these categories, and I will be in touch with those folks tomorrow:

  • LGBT Studies - guides are owned by several folks, but I don't see a "liaison" to this area in the list.
  • Natural Resources Management - guides are owned by several folks, but no one person is listed to this "area"
  • Speech Language Pathology - I think this is probably owned currently by Beth, but it wasn't listed in the subject guide.
  • Writing - Hazel is the liaison, but Writing 150's liaison is Emily. For now I've added them both, but perhaps Writing 150 needs to be its own "subject"?

Minor Issue for Subject & Course Guides Resolved

[8/7 @ 3:46 pm - Matthew]

Editing friendly URLs seem broken. If you already had a friendly URL in place and you want to change it, it seems to append the new text to the old friendly URL. If you try to edit by putting the whole URL you want in, it gives you a grumpy message. :)

[8/13 @ 5:41 pm - Matthew]

It turns out this is a feature, not a bug! What we mistook for the guide level friendly URL was actually a new feature, page friendly URLs. Now you can create friendly URLs for each page/tab of your guide, like "/history/databases" or "/english/websites."

Because of a conflict between our custom code and the LibGuides editor code, the ability to edit subjects, tags, and friendly URLs was broken. Thus, the actual friendly URL editor wasn't showing up. I currently turned off running our custom code on admin pages, but this distorts the idea of how much room you have to work with in displaying your guide, but I am working to get our code cooperating with Springshare's editor code in the next day or so.

[8/19 @ 1:22 pm - Matthew]

I have fixed the part of the template that was missing, allowing you to now update friendly URLs, subjects, and tags.

Minor Issue for Subject & Course Guides Resolved

[8/6 @ 5:08 pm - Matthew]

Summon 2.0 is unable to harvest data in LibGuides 2.0. This is a Serials Solutions/ProQuest issue, not a Springshare issue, but I'm cross-listing it here for reference.

Full details at http://labs.library.gvsu.edu/status/detail.php?id=180

[12/18 @ 6:14 am - Matthew]

This has been resolved. LibGuides 2.0 guides are now harvested directly into Summon. (This was never a Springshare issue, but a Serials Solutions one.)

This Minor Issue was reported on 8/6/14 and resolved on 12/18/14.

Minor Issue for Summon Resolved

[8/6 @ 4:59 pm - Matthew]

Summon 2.0 just announced that they are unable to harvest content from LibGuides 2.0. They are working to update their harvesting script, but had no ETA as to when content from LibGuides 2.0 will be available in Summon.

Recently, there has been a number of questions regarding the support for LibGuides 2.0 in Summon. After a bit of evaluation and testing, we have found that the content from LibGuides 2.0 is not compatible with our LibGuide harvester. We are actively working on building support for harvesting LibGuides 2.0 pages and will follow up with you once we have a timeline for when this will be supported. This is especially important for those who already have their LibGuides 1.0 pages indexed in Summon and are working on a transition to LibGuides 2.0. We do not yet have a date for when this will be ready, but we will keep you in the loop as soon as we are able to provide a timeline.

I asked Andrew a followup question, about whether this meant just the librarian and guide mapping in the sidebar or all content. His response was that it affects all content for LibGuides 2.0, meaning no guides will appear in search results until they update their harvester.

[5:07 pm - Matthew]

According to our usage statistics, very few folks click on LibGuides in search results. The average hovers around .0186%. (Last month was 4 out of 21,510 clicks on search results.) While it's not ideal to not have LibGuides appearing in our discovery layer, we have also known that most folks visit LibGuides directly, not from a search. I think the data is backing up this perception we gained over the years through interviews and usability tests.

I will keep you up-to-date on Serials Solutions progress with harvesting LibGuides 2.0 data.

Minor Issue for Summon Resolved

[8/6 @ 4:56 pm - Matthew]

Summon 2.0 does not currently offer RSS feeds, which was a staple of 1.0. According to their road map, RSS feeds will be added at some point, but no date has been determined. There is a community effort to write an RSS feed generator, but no updates have come out about that.

[8/19 @ 4:49 pm - Matthew]

Summon announced that RSS feeds are on the roadmap to be launched before December 2014. Here is the full announcement:

What is being worked on for upcoming releases of the user interface?
Below is a list of some of the planned work for the Summon 2.0 user interface. Please note that this list is not a representation of everything being worked on regarding the user interface. Nor does it include other aspects of Summon 2.0 such as infrastructure and search/relevance work.

Highlights for July - December 2014 releases (in priority order):

  • Updated multilingual Help page
  • WCAG 2.0 AA Compliance
  • Right to Left Language Support
  • Feedback Link
  • Usage Analytics Reporting
  • RSS Feed
  • Configuration of Topic Sources in Admin Console
  • Configuration of Facets in Admin Console
[6/23 @ 11:34 am - Matthew]

This is scheduled to be resolved in the June 25, 2015 update

[7/20 @ 2:06 pm - Matthew]

RSS feeds are now available in Summon. As of July 22nd, they will no longer require authentication through the proxy.

Minor Issue for Subject & Course Guides Resolved

[8/6 @ 4:41 pm - Matthew]

Editing the title of profile boxes does not change the display title.

[4:42 pm - Matthew]

Debbie originally reported this, but when I went in to her guide with administrative rights, I was able to edit the box title successfully. However, it made the content of the box disappear, showing an error message instead.

I'm submitting a ticket to Springshare on this one.

[8/7 @ 3:12 pm - Matthew]

From Springshare:

This is a known issue, which we are working to fix.

For the time begin, Debbie would have to manually update each profile box of hers. The reason that you got that error, was because you where not signed in as her. :(

We're working on solving this issue, as fast as possible, and hope to a fix in place in the next week or two.

Profile page templates don't look right.

[4:38 pm - Matthew]

The template for these is not working correctly, and this is something I need to fix. Here is an example of what we're seeing (Kim's profile):

Kim's profile, with the template not displaying correctly

[8/13 @ 9:40 am - Matthew]

This is also affecting Subject landing pages.

I couldn't find where to update this, so I sent a ticket to Springshare. Here is their response:

The ability to customize the public pages (pretty much everything other than guides and the homepage) is another thing on the to-do list. And unfortunately again, I cannot give a timeline as to when this feature will go live. I know that we are planning another code update in the next week or two, so hopefully we can start knocking some of these big requests out.

This is a big problem, since we can't go live with these commonly used pages looking like this. I'm going to push them to get this fixed ASAP, and will update once I have more details.

[5:42 pm - Matthew]

We have been assured by Springshare that this will be fixed by early next week before we go live. As a result, we have moved the go live date back to Wednesday, August 20th.

[8/19 @ 11:16 am - Matthew]

Springshare gave us the ability to customize the templates over the weekend. I am working on making the updates now.

[12:59 pm - Matthew]

Librarians cannot edit their own subject associations?

[4:29 pm - Matthew]

This is now an administrator function in LibGuides 2.0. If your list isn't correct, let us know and we'll update them for you. This isn't that big of a deal for me, since I already have to update liaison areas in the librarians by name and by subject pages, as well as the staff directory.

Minor Issue for Subject & Course Guides Resolved

[8/6 @ 3:38 pm - Matthew]

Some faculty create a link for the profile box widget to embed in course Blackboard sites. Will widgets created for v.1 continue to work once we go live?

[3:42 pm - Matthew]

From Springshare:

"..if they are using v1 widgets (API calls), they'll need to create code for v2 widgets instead. v1 widgets will load v1 profiles. I was ask a developer to confirm this.

I know Bob uses profile widgets with his faculty, but if anyone else uses them, can you let me know? I can look into working with IT to replace the links without having to involve the teaching faculty.

[8/8 @ 3:01 pm - Matthew]

I am exploring whether IT can batch change these for us in Blackboard.

[8/13 @ 10:12 am - Matthew]

N.B.: LibGuides v1 links should redirect to the new version, but API/Widgets will continue to work for at least 3 months after going live. We're hoping for a better solution, but at least we have some time to work it out.

[8/19 @ 1:00 pm - Matthew]

We will we working on this on a case-by-case basis. I'll help folks create new profile widgets, and then I'll be tracking use of the old api links to see if we can find where these profile links live. IT has been unable to find any in Blackboard, so it may not be an issue after all.

Minor Issue for Subject & Course Guides Resolved

[8/6 @ 3:34 pm - Matthew]

When you click the "Add/Reorder" menu in a box near the bottom of a page, the menu is cut off by the footer, which appears above the menu.

[3:35 pm - Matthew]

This is an issue with the way I designed the template. I am working on a CSS fix for this (this isn't a Springshare issue, but a result of trying to cram three different types of styles into one product. :) )

[8/13 @ 10:05 am - Matthew]

I updated the template styles to fix this issue. (For those interested, the GVSU template #content wrapper and #page-content wrappers both had a style called "overflow: hidden." This meant that anything that might bleed over the edges of these wrappers would be hidden. The fix was to add a new style to override the default, setting "overflow: visible.")

However, because LG does not display the GVSU footer on the bottom of the page, the menu still bleeds off the bottom of the viewport, since the page is not long enough. I am working on another fix for this.

[10:21 am - Matthew]

I've added an update to this that fixes the issue on desktop (haven't tested enough on mobile). Now, the menu will appear to go off the bottom of the screen, but if you scroll the window down, it will continue past the bottom of the footer:

Feature Request for Subject & Course Guides Resolved

[8/6 @ 3:33 pm - Matthew]

In the LG dashboard, Unpublished guides are listed first. The way we use guides, unpublished things are sandboxes and things that don't get touched often. For some folks, that means a long list of unnecessary content between them and their useful guides. Can this order be changed?

[3:33 pm - Matthew]

Ticket submitted to Springshare. They are asking the development team why that behavior is in place, and whether it is customizable.

[3/2 @ 1:32 pm - Matthew]

It seems that we are unusual in how we use guides, since Springshare hasn't found a need for this among other customers:

Moving "Unpublished Guides" down in the "Edit Existing Guides" dropdown menu: We currently don't have any plans to change this. The main reason for this is because many libraries seem to like they way things are organized by their owned and edited content. If we get more folks asking for a change then we'll reconsider.

This Feature Request was reported on 8/6/14 and resolved on 3/2/16.

Minor Issue for Subject & Course Guides Resolved

[8/6 @ 3:29 pm - Matthew]

Comments did not appear to migrate. They weren't listed in either the "will migrate" or "will not migrate" lists, but I assumed they were part of "All Guide Content."

[3:31 pm - Matthew]

From Springshare:

"Comments have not been coded yet, and we are having an internal discussion about which pieces will be included in version 2. Comments weren't listed in the migration documentation as migrating or not because we haven't figured out how they'll work yet."

It doesn't look like too many of our folks were using comments (I know Kim was). If comments are essential to you (Kim was using them as part of an assignment) then get in touch and I will come up with a work-around for you while we wait for native comments.

[9/14 @ 3:24 pm - Matthew]

Closing this out. Comments will not be part of LibGuides 2.0 as far as we can tell.

Feedback forms did not migrate, and surveys are not yet available. What should we use in the interim?

[3:26 pm - Matthew]

From Springshare:

"For feedback forms, you could use a poll for simple feedback, or you could use a survey. Surveys/Forms will be available inside CMS in the next week or so."

I recommend waiting a week or two and then we can re-add feedback. If you used to have feedback forms on your pages, I sent you an email a few weeks ago letting you know that I'd help you recreate them once we migrated. Once surveys are live, I'll get in touch again and we'll add your feedback forms back in.

Cannot edit subjects or tags on guides. The pencil icons are absent in edit mode (also missing from the title and description, but those can at least be edited.)

[3:23 pm - Matthew]

Ticket submitted to Springshare - they have a developer looking into this.

[8/13 @ 5:44 pm - Matthew]

This is due to a conflict between our custom code and the Springshare editor code. I've removed our custom code from our administrative pages, but this distorts the amount of space you have to work with for content. I am working on a fix, and hope to have it live by the end of the week.

[8/19 @ 1:21 pm - Matthew]

I have restored the portion of the template that was missing, causing this functionality to disappear.

For folks who might find this in the future: Springshare requires the Bootstrap classes to appear for the editing pages. The div that wraps around the {guide_description} tag in the default template must be in place for the friendly URL, subject, and tag editing panel to appear. The div needs the following syntax:

There doesn't seem to be a way to reorder boxes on a page. You can reorder items within a box, but not the boxes themselves.

[3:03 pm - Matthew]

Response from Springshare (I did our template in late April or early May I think?):

"For reordering boxes, there's a Page menu that your template is missing. We updated templates in May; this blog post will tell you how to add that back: "

I'll update this soon.

I updated the guide template to have the markup they suggest, and now our ability to reorder boxes (and change columns) is back:

Minor Issue for Subject & Course Guides Resolved

[8/6 @ 2:46 pm - Matthew]

Cannot change title, window location, etc. when reusing an asset (like a database link). We were told we could edit all the details except for the link.

[2:54 pm - Matthew]

Here are the notes I included about why this was an issue for us:

  1. Sometimes the canonical title is not the same as the title in practice. For example. in our Database table we might want a resources to be called ProQuest something something, but in the discipline, no one calls it ProQuest, they just say something something. On the guide we want to drop the ProQuest. Another possibility are the databases that are called Abstracts but really are full text.
  2. For some reason the behavior of the link (target self or blank) is set on the asset, rather than the individual link! Sometimes you want a link to open in a new window, sometimes you dont, even if the link goes to the same place. So we have to change these manually? Thats several hundred assets.
  3. Is there a way to batch change the way asset links display on a page? Almost everyone wants them to show text as a pop-up (which is what they were in 1.0) but in almost every case, they are displayed below the text. I dont want to manually edit each one, Id like the ability to target certain guides and have all links change.
  4. It took us a long time to realize that the reuse pop-up for a link couldnt be edited. The real problem, however, came from the Database type field. Ive already received dozens of reports that all the databases are set as Music/Audio and Video databases, because the non-editable field shows those two categories as tokens. However, they are not selected, but it isnt clear from this page that they are not selected. Is there a reason all of these fields need to be displayed when you cant edit them anyway?
[3:01 pm - Matthew]

Here was the response from Springshare (numbers added so you can connect them to issues):

  1. We plan to expand the functionality of the AZ list in future releases, including adding at least one note or customizable field. I would suggest that you use the note field for the canonical name, but the name field for the common name. I'll send this suggestion to our Features team as well—it's useful to know how clients need our products to work. :)
  2. The target behavior of Database assets should be driven by the system setting for links in Admin > System Settings > Guide Defaults, and the setting inside each asset overrides or confirms that. ...but this means that they work the same way for everyone who adds a database to their guide. Opening links in the same window is the behavior encouraged by the W3C. I'll send this suggestion through our features review process, too. [Matt's note: While it is true that the W3C supports the idea that links should behave according to user preferences, not website preferences, there are specific use cases that almost necessitate the use of new windows. Databases are one of those instances. I don't want all of our links to open in a new window, but databases route folks through our proxy server, and often have server-side redirects as well, so opening things in the same window will often break the back button, which confuses our patrons much more than opening a new window or tab.]
  3. I'll ask our developer if we can batch-change assets for you--my guess is that we probably can, but to do so we'll need a list of asset numbers. I'll ask about changing all the links in certain guides.
  4. Hiding fields from the Edit pane for databases is possible with CSS, if you'd like to do that. They're there just for informational purposes, so you don't have to go into Content > Assets > A-Z list in order to see what's in those fields. [Matt's note: I'll write some custom CSS to make this happen soon.]
[8/8 @ 3:03 pm - Matthew]

Regarding #4: This is a known bug that will be fixed soon. In the meantime I deleted all of the Database types so they don't confuse folks using the asset manager.

[9/9 @ 9:27 am - Matthew]

Regarding #2:

  1. For some reason the behavior of the link (target self or blank) is set on the asset, rather than the individual link! Sometimes you want a link to open in a new window, sometimes you dont, even if the link goes to the same place. So we have to change these manually? Thats several hundred assets.

while we wait, I changed the default link behavior to open in a new window, which allows folks using databases and such to have both their databases and the LibGuide open at the same time. I'll update once (if) Springshare gives us more nuanced control over how links behave!

[9/16 @ 11:53 am - Matthew]

A new update regarding #3:

  1. Is there a way to batch change the way asset links display on a page? Almost everyone wants them to show text as a pop-up (which is what they were in 1.0) but in almost every case, they are displayed below the text. I dont want to manually edit each one, Id like the ability to target certain guides and have all links change.

The answer from Springshare:

Batch changes to db assets and other assets are on the horizon, but they're not done yet, unfortunately. Looking at our feature tracker, we've envisioned asset changes happening under content>assets, rather than on a particular guide. Right now, though, the only way is to go through and do them one-by-one.

[1/27 @ 11:12 am - Matthew]

Springshare has announced that they will be reorganizing the assets functionality of LG, allowing liaisons to customize nearly all aspects of the asset when it is in use (all except for the URL, which is what makes it unique!)

When I checked last week, their ETA for launching this was "late January or early February." I'll update once I know more.

Minor Issue for Link Resolver Resolved

[6/5 @ 11:14 am - Sara]

We have encountered several examples of the link resolver failing when attempting to link into ScienceDirect. The page will be blank or the message will state that the url is invalid. The only common factor is that ScienceDirect is the target. Not all SD articles are doing this but generally when one article in a journal fails to connect, you can be fairly sure they all will display the same behavior. I have contacted Elsevier and will update when I hear back.

Minor Issue for Catalog Resolved

[6/3 @ 2:30 pm - Matthew]

Early versions of Internet Explorer will not run the JavaScript that we added to simplify the request button placement in the catalog. I'm working on rewriting the code to play nice with older versions of IE, but in the short term, please use a modern browser like Firefox, Safari, or Chrome.

[6/4 @ 12:39 pm - Matthew]

A few weeks ago, I moved all of the JavaScript files to load at the end of the page (which is where they should be). Unfortunately, someone at III starts calling inline JavaScript in the system-generated templates as the page is rendering. Since the JS files hadn't loaded yet, the functions they called were undefined. It turns out that IE 8 and 9 have a peculiar behavior when they encounter a JS error: they stop loading ANY JavaScript, even things from other files. Hence why the request button wouldn't appear: the JS error happened before any of our files were loaded or parsed.

I added a conditional comment for IE versions 9 and below to pre-load the 4 functions that III requires for the system-generated search box. That keeps IE from throwing an error when the search box renders, and allows our JavaScript to run and the request button to appear.

If patrons still encounter this problem, make sure they clear their cache (Delete Internet Files) or upgrade to a modern browser.

These reports are coming from faculty and students, regardless of browser or platform. I have contacted Serials Solutions to work out a resolution to this issue as soon as possible. In the meantime, the following steps will resolve the problem for any patron that experiences it:

  1. Go to http://gvsu.summon.serialssolutions.com
  2. Run a search from the search box there, and wait for the results to display
  3. Head back to http://gvsu.edu/library and try a search from the search box. It should be working now.

What seems to be happening is that the new interface needs to load a small file on your computer so that the new interface loads. For some reason, coming from our gvsu.edu domain, that file fails to load on some machines (it seems to be browser and mac/pc independent). Once it has failed to load once, it wont load unless you visit the URL of the search tool directly (as in step 1). That forces the file to load and all seems well after that.

[7/2 @ 9:45 am - Matthew]

Serials Solutions has tracked down the problem that is causing the blank screens on some searches, and has created a fix. The code will be live with their next update, currently scheduled for July 9th. I'll update once the fix has been pushed through, but hopefully we shouldn't see this anymore.

[8/6 @ 4:55 pm - Matthew]

We have been unable to replicate this problem since the fix was put in place, so we're closing out this issue.

When cleaning out unused files in the Sierra Web Master, I accidentally removed the file that styles the My Account login page. The page still works, but has reverted to the default (ugly) look. I'll replace the missing file on Monday morning.

  1. Users can download a stand-alone application for the Mac that replicates the online Chemical modeling software. We have added a note to the Scifinder login page directing users to take this route.

  2. This is a multi-step process, but should allow Mac users to make the software work in the browser:

  • Access javatester.org
  • If "method 1" shows an "inactive plugin" error—then click the link and run the program.
  • Reload the javatester page and method 1 should indicate a pinkish box.
  • Quit browser completely
  • Reopen and log into Scifinder. It should work without a problem

Minor Issue for Document Delivery Resolved

[6/26 @ 10:00 am - Matthew]

There are severe usability issues for users of Internet Explorer 8 and below on the document delivery home screen. We are working to provide a solution as soon as possible.

[9:12 pm - Matthew]

We ran into some big usability issues with Document Delivery this week that needed to be changed right away. The home screen, where users see active requests and items they have received, was unusable for many of our patrons in Internet Explorer 7 & 8. We spent yesterday writing code to fix the problems, and hopefully made the site a little better for everyone.

We've added a status table at the top of the main screen that shows you, at a glance, your current active & outstanding requests. We also give folks an easy-to-see request button, which was one of our most common complaints from new users. The button takes them to the article request form, and we've added tabs to easily switch between the different item types.

Before the change
Before the change, with items in your account
After the change
After the change, with items in your account
New tabbed navigation in request forms
New tabbed navigation in request forms

We'll be updating the separate forms into a more intuitive, single form like Course Reserve later this summer.

f you don't have any outstanding requests, or checked out items, we hide the table, but keep the count visible to you in the status table at the top of your screen. One other big issue I tried to solve with this fix was for new users, who are greeted by 3 empty tables and no visual cue as to how they were to use Document Delivery. In those cases, we hide all of the empty tables and give users a simple overview of Doc Del, as well as a big button. I hope this will cut down on first-time user problems for Vicki and her team.

Before the change
Before the change, new patrons were unsure what to do next
After the change
After the change, we help patrons understand the next step

I apologize for the short notice on these changes, but the issue was severe enough to need an immediate change.

Minor Issue for Databases Resolved

[6/18 @ 2:04 pm - Jeff]

We should have access to the Economist Historical Archive from 1843-2009. Currently it is only giving us access to 1999. While a good year, I felt we should try to gain full access again and I have emailed the vendor.

[6/19 @ 8:37 am - Jeff]

This has been resolved.

[2:36 pm - Matthew]

We have replaced the Twitter feed with a version using the new API, which offers additional features such as inline image displays and the ability to Tweet right from the embedded widget.

Minor Issue for Sierra ILS Resolved

[6/12 @ 9:14 am - Patrick]

MeLCat items are not always checked in correctly and items remain on the patron account. Work around is to change item status to @ - MeL Loan and check in again. Innovative is aware of this issue and is working on a fix.

[7/27 @ 8:25 am - Patrick]

This doesn't seem to be happening anymore. This was never reported as a resolved issue from Sierra, but we've had two upgrades since this was first reported and no recent issues. I'm closing this, but if the issue arises again I'll post an update.

Minor Issue for Displays & Room Wizards Resolved

[6/7 @ 2:37 pm - Matthew]

We are working with IT to get the computers in MaryI added to the computer availability API. Currently there is no information for Allendale locations. In addition, numbers for Steelcase are approximate while the computer lab is closed.

We hope these issues will be resolved by the start of Fall semester.

[8/7 @ 12:43 pm - Matthew]

While IT updated the computer availability to include Mary Idema Pew, only PCs are currently counted. Once Macs are working, we will update the availability site with the new location.

[8/23 @ 1:39 pm - Matthew]

We are waiting on Atrium level computers to be added to the availability map, as well.

[9/30 @ 10:45 am - Matthew]

Atrium PC computers in public areas are now showing up in the computer availability map.

[2/10 @ 12:43 pm - Matthew]

Frey computer numbers are incorrect. IT has imaged all public computers except for those in 490 as being in 290 CHS. There are only 12 computers in 290. We are working with IT to address the issue, although we may remove Frey from the computer map if we cannot get accurate numbers.

[9/14 @ 3:37 pm - Matthew]

Mary gave me a complete list of machines at Frey and Steelcase, and I have sent it to Institutional Marketing to get the computer map updated. I'll work with Mary to get an updated list for Mary I, too, so we can fix the accuracy issues we've dealt with for the past 2 years.

[1/25 @ 3:18 pm - Matthew]

Closing out this issue, and starting a new one for the last open part of the original (Macs are not included).

Minor Issue for Course Reserve Resolved

Currently, when an instructor uploads an item, they will be logged out. The upload works fine, but this is an obvious inconvenience for the instructor.

We are looking into the problem and will fix it as soon as possible.

[6/12 @ 1:07 pm - Matthew]

We have put in a ticket with Ares to have them help us resolve this issue, since it looks like it might be an issue on their server.

[6/13 @ 11:56 am - Matthew]
