ScienceDirect is having intermittent linking issues where patrons will get the message "Sorry, your request can not be processed due to a system problem. Contact the Help Desk if the problem persists. [SD-009]" this is a known issue and they are working to resolve it as soon as possible.

StarWalk KidsMedia is not working from off campus. The problem seems to be that their platform does not work properly with our Ezproxy authentication server. They need to work with OCLC to resolve this, we have no timeline on a fix.

The Database A-Z list is experiencing some issues right now. The page should be showing all 291 of our resources, and while it does show that we have that many in the system, it is only displaying 100 (reflected in the heading at the top of the list). What's more, the databases are alphabetized only by the first letter of the name, and after that, they seem to be randomly arranged.

Faculty and Staff with Windows 8 machines cannot view the Database A-Z page from off-campus. Something on LibGuides seems to be conflicting with IT's auto-VPN setup called "GVSU-DIrectAccess."

We have contacted Springshare to see what might be happening on their end, and will continue to try to get IT to take a look at the issue.

We also encourage you to ask the faculty and staff members to submit a ticket with the help desk. Hopefully force of numbers will help us diagnose the issue.

We've identified the problem with Windows 8 machines not accessing library sites or resources from off-campus: IT's DirectAccess configuration seems to ignore the ANAMEs we've added to the server to give our vendor-hosted systems a gvsu.edu domain name. So, visiting libguides.gvsu.edu tells a server somewhere that this URL should direct folks to another server, one hosted at libguides.com. This is incredibly common behavior on the web, but the configuration of IT's DirectConnect seems to break these ANAME forwarding patterns.

The trouble is, IT manages both the ANAMEs and the DirectConnect. We've contacted them with this information and are waiting for follow-up.

IT has finally gotten back with us about this, and it seems like it was a pretty quick fix for them. They've added all of our ANAME sites to the Direct Access exception list, and this problem should be resolved. Mary will try to test it off-campus later today.

We're still working to clarify whether faculty or staff will have to do something to their machines to load the new settings, or whether it will be seamless for them. I'll updated once we know the issues has been addressed.

IT has made the necessary changes to allow Windows 8 laptops with DirectAccess to use library resources, including the database A-Z list, LibGuides, the Knowledge Base, the catalog, ScholarWorks, the Library Labs site, and all EZProxied links.

I checked today and it seems to work and i found this message that they posted about the progress they are making with fixing it:

We are continuing to make progress restoring full access to JSTOR. Users should be able to search, browse, and access most journal articles and primary sources on www.jstor.org. Access to books as well as journal content published in the most recent few years may be intermittent.

We will be keeping a close eye on it, and let me know if you see it not working again.

Our proxy software (allows access to online resources from off campus) will be migrating to a new server this Saturday, September 26 at 9:30 pm. Access to all online resources will be unavailable for about an hour as we switch to the new server and run tests. Even on campus access will be affected. We tried to get this done before the semester started but the vendor couldn’t accommodate, Saturday evening should minimize the impact.

We have set up a new resource this morning. Docuseek2 provides access to academic streaming videos, with over 600 titles in all major disciplines.

We will be loading marc records in the new week or so.

Each video has a Link to/Embed button that will provide a link that can be used to add these videos to blackboard. We have unlimited users on this resource.

I have added this to the database table. Liaisons, now that this is set up as a database asset, please let me know if you would like to associate it with any specific subject, if so, let me know if it should be a “best bet”.

We have recently replaced the database “Communication and Mass Media Complete” with “Communication Source”. This replacement was an upgrade in the resource. We are removing CMMC from our database list and adding Communication Source. For the Subject Guides we switched any instance linking to CMMC with a link to Communication Source. We have switched vendors for the resource Index Islamicus. We have moved from EBSCO to ProQuest. The reason is that for over a year we have been reporting to EBSCO that by using roman numerals for issues numbers, they are causing our link resolver to fail even when we have full text. ProQuest is using the proper OpenURL standard of Arabic Numerals and therefor the link resolver works properly. (it was also cheaper!)

Credo Reference is making some slight changes to their interface. Ben and Jeff have looked at the screen shots and they are minor, but should increase usability. Credo wants to roll some libraries over to the new interface in May and test how patrons use the new interface. We don't need to do anything, our links will stay the same. We'v told them to go ahead and included GVSU in their testing.

At last week's usability testing we noticed a student become confused by us offering two links into Business Source Complete. You can search BSC on the standard EBSCO interface, but you can also search it using their business interface, tweaked specifically for the content in that resource. Passport (from Euromonitor) is an online market research database used to understand the global business environment in a time of rapid change and increased globalization. Passport features millions of statistics and in-depth reports on 28 industries across 80 markets worldwide, with demographic, macro- and socio-economic data and analysis on consumers and economies in 210 countries.

I have set this up on the database table, as well as adding it to the LibGuides A-Z database list. (I’ve tagged it as statistical in both)

We also purchased the one time add-on “Markets of the Future”

Good afternoon, We have just set up this exciting new resource. This is a collection of over 9,000 streaming videos.

I have set this up on the database table, as well as adding it to the LibGuides A-Z database list.

A few things to note. GVSU does have unlimited users to each title in this collection. We also have public performance rights for all of these titles. These can be shown at a GVSU event even if there are members from the public present AS LONG AS we are not charging any admission.

We are doing a combination of DDA (Demand Driven Access) as well as subscription (to one collection), if you would like more details please ask myself or Sarah Beaubien.

There have been a lot of faculty waiting to use this resource, please spread the word. We are working to add these titles to our catalog, but at this time not every title has a marc records, I have already asked when they expect that to be complete. The content is indexed in Summon.

Yes “Killing us Softly 4” is a title in this collection.

KNOVEL- Knovel will not work in Chrome when patrons try to click on a text section. They can perform searches and click on books, equations, and data tables without problem. Only in Chrome and only when clicking on specific text sections in results or in a book will the error occur. The screen will flash and the page will fail to load. Should be resolved after Saturday when they will be running an update.

Google Scholar & Get it @ GVSU Article Linker: Google appears to have made changes to their format. Our button for article linking from Google Scholar traditionally was placed directly to the right of the article it was linking. Now you will find this feature at the very bottom of the article details. Where you see "cited by, citation, ect, you will see "More" as an option. Click on this to see our Get it @ GVSU button. This is not ideal but it is not within our control to make changes to this particular feature.

SRDS had a tool Local Market Analysis that it hosts which will not work with any browser outside of IE8 and below. Last year this time (Oct 2013) they gave us the work around of using compatibility mode on IE to get the tool to work. This year they found that we can use Firefox and Google if we download the add ons for IE specifically (IE Tab V2 (Enhanced IE Tab) 5.12.12.1”) for Firefox and the "IE Tab" for Google Chrome, found via search in the Google web store. I tried both of these and they provide a compatibility icon in the upper right of the browser, once clicked this will let you access SRDS and use LMA without problem. LMA is the only issue here. This does not affect other SRDS resources.

The web of science Databases are experiencing some reports of access problems for your databases. It has been telling us a System error has occurred. They told us that there was a new Web of Knowledge release last weekend that has resulted in some intermittent access and search issues. Most of the problems are resolved, and in particular this problem is usually resolved simply by clearing your browser cache (temporary Internet files) and cookies to ensure a clean new session.

Currently there is a problem with Java compatibility for Mac users in the Scifinder database. We are working with the vendor for a solution.

There are two solutions to this problem:

  1. Users can download a stand-alone application for the Mac that replicates the online Chemical modeling software. We have added a note to the Scifinder login page directing users to take this route.

  2. This is a multi-step process, but should allow Mac users to make the software work in the browser:

  • Access javatester.org
  • If "method 1" shows an "inactive plugin" error—then click the link and run the program.
  • Reload the javatester page and method 1 should indicate a pinkish box.
  • Quit browser completely
  • Reopen and log into Scifinder. It should work without a problem

We should have access to the Economist Historical Archive from 1843-2009. Currently it is only giving us access to 1999. While a good year, I felt we should try to gain full access again and I have emailed the vendor.

American Chemical Society has blocked us temporarily due to a user abusing our download quota. We are working with them to get access restored.
